Many dream of starting their spring with a new beginning, whether it be moving house, redecorating or even renovating. As we emerge from the colder months to embrace the warmer weather and new design ideas, it can be tricky to know exactly where to begin.
Our expert design team at North Homes, led by General Manager Geoff Pollock
and Customer and Operations Manager Sarah Verheyen, have compiled a list of current design trends to help you discover your new spring style.
Colour palettes to watch
Sarah explains that “After a period of muted greys, whites and beiges, the warmer weather is bringing some excitement back into the home with spring colours such as forest greens, sassy warm oranges and harmonious hues of blue. Today’s design trends show a reconnection with nature, as well as a conscious combination of indoor and outdoor spaces.”
Post-COVID, there is a new enthusiasm towards brightening things up coming from both homeowners and designers. “These warmer colours are allowing us to feel alive again and connecting with nature is important after a very long winter indoors,” she says, adding that some other seasonal hues are also finding their place in today’s styling trends. “Spring colours are so much more fun and vibrant, however I do feel that winter whites are an evergreen favourite and we will always generally go back to them – or mix up the two.”
A lively mix of hues in light, open spaces
Big, open spaces are perfect for letting in plenty of natural light, which is just what homeowners want this season. “Tall ceilings, bigger rooms, large openings with stacking sliding doors and grand windows, all of these elements allow us to feel alive and vibrant again, plus they allow us to reconnect with the great outdoors. It’s been a very wet winter in Sydney, so we all want to feel a little sunshine in the home again,” Sarah describes. To ensure these layout and colour choices appeal all year round, she says a gentle, mixed palette is key. “In the home space, whites, soft greys, and beiges often liven up the home along and contrast with bright furnishings. Incorporating eye-catching pieces around your home such as stunning artwork or unique throws and patterned pillows can really lift a space.”
Signature designs
Post-COVID, space has become king at home – both inside and out. As Geoff explains, “Our Signature Series homes were inspired by open living areas and inviting floorplans that bring the outside into the home. We have created spacious homes with raked ceilings, which allow for plenty of airflow and natural light through the use of voids. Maximising space is imperative with large rooms and functional design.”
As Geoff describes, our newfound love of regional areas has also been considered, even for those living in Sydney. “We’re reconnecting Australians with their love of their country by theming our homes to the city, coast and city – places we haven’t been able explore for a while.” Externally, North Homes has incorporated the use of lightweight cladding colours, along with textured bold timbers and aluminium screens to provide a greater aesthetic and more privacy.
New wish-lists are emerging
Multiple living zones spilling out to alfresco entertainment areas are at the top of buyers’ wish lists, with functional features also in demand. “Storage is a must, home theatres are very popular and butler’s pantries are highly desired at the moment. I think people have fallen back in love with cooking since COVID so their kitchens are also a focal point. Then of course study areas are still sought after for people who are continuing to work from home,” Sarah observes. When it comes to commonly requested modifications, she says family is front and centre. “Prayer rooms are in demand, as are larger living rooms, extra ensuites and space for extended family to stay or even live in.”
Redefining modern, family living
Knowing what today’s homeowners want comes down to experience, reflects Geoff. “We’ve spent many years listening to our clients’ needs and interpreting the way modern family living is changing. We’ve listened to how clients want to use their homes in a different way since COVID and we’ve adapted to these requirements. The overwhelming theme is people love natural light, want plenty of fresh air and the space to relax with friends and family.”
