The second instalment of our Summer Styling blog talks to creating finishes that complete your home and ensuring the look and feel of your style resonates throughout your interiors and extends to the outdoors.
Add finishes that compliment your summer look
Window dressings, flooring, bench tops, furniture and decor are all great ways to add hints of summer cool that bring your whole look together. Using subtle detailing in these elements will help you to recreate a dreamy coastal look, that will make you feel like you’re beside the ocean on a warm summer day.
Opaque or block out drapes might be necessary in bedrooms to keep out early morning rays, but they’re probably not needed in every room. Think about installing full length sheer curtains to let in more light, while also adding privacy to your home.
Light, natural timber treatments in kitchens and bathrooms are a classic aesthetic for a coastal cool look. When mixed with paler stone surfaces, they don’t only look good but are also cool to the touch.
Tap into summer through soft furnishings and décor
Textiles are a simple and cost-effective way to inject a splash of summer to your lounge, dining room or bedroom. As we mentioned in Part 1, pastel shades are the best way to add a subtle vibrancy to your furnishings such as, throws, cushions and rugs which can also be rotated throughout the seasons.
In bedrooms, fresh linen, feature pillows with a botanical accent or a mix of complimentary palettes will add points of interest to your room.
Wall art is another inspiring way to continue a sense of year-long holidays. Paintings, prints or vintage advertising depicting vacation vibes can also tap into happy memories or aspirational adventures.
For a more permanent change, reupholster a favourite chair with natural brighter fabrics or treat the floors to a lighter shade or tile.
Connecting with the great outdoors
There are many ways to carry the beauty of nature through your home such as freshly cut flowers and plenty of greenery. Add a peaceful vibrancy to your space with popular indoor plants such as bromeliads, fiddle leaf, ficus, birds of paradise, peace lily, parlour palms and maidenhead ferns.
You can even spread your favourite summer fragrance through each room using candles, diffusers and aromatherapy products inspired by seasonal blooms, the beach, citrus, or eucalyptus.
An outdoor alfresco space is essentially an extension of your home over the warmer months. With a covered ‘outdoor room’ style deck or patio, you can still fill it with the same textured natural elements as inside without worrying about the damaging effects of the harsh elements. Extend summer nights (and save on energy bills) with solar-powered festoon or fairy lighting in your alfresco area or add an outdoor fire pit to the backyard to stay warm all year round.
Plants in pots, even outside, allow you to move them around to suit the seasons or even bring them inside when it gets cold. Reduce the heat in these spaces by using natural stone underfoot and outdoor fans above.
